A follow-up from the last post on DISD education. I believe it hits the nail on the head.

Hey Kids! Life is easy

I came across this story just a few minutes ago and it has infuriated me.

“DISD plan to ease grading standards angers teachers”

For example, the new rules require teachers to accept late work and prevent them from penalizing students for missed deadlines. Homework grades that would drag down a student’s overall average will be thrown out.

School officials said the new guidelines are needed to ensure that all district teachers operate under the same rules and to create a “fair system” for grading students.

Bueller?… Bueller?… Bueller?

I’ve been absent for awhile. I have had the ideas to blog about but the desire to type those ideas into a blog have not been present.

I’ve enjoyed 4 weeks off from school. I managed somehow to pull a B in both of my classes in the Spring semester. I fully expected a B in Economics but was really sweating just passing Calculus. It was a very good thing that our instructor handed out effort points on our tests.

Summer classes start next week. I’m taking one class in June and one in July. Then I’ll have another month off to relax, if that’s even possible.

The weekend after school ended, we headed up to Branson for a vacation club “seminar” that we bought earlier in the year. It was good to get away, but unless you’re old or incredibly redneck, Branson, Missouri is not the city for you. It’s beautiful country to drive through, but the actual driving is a pain.

People have been complaining about gas prices a lot. I don’t like them either, but please understand this: it’s appropriately priced. We can bitch and moan about the oil companies making record profits all we want, but if you had your own business you would want to milk your customers for all you could too. It’s simple supply and demand people. Once demand goes up, price goes up. I don’t know if there’s a so-called shortage, but until we figure out a way to reduce our consumption, it’s going to keep going up. So get over it.

Ounce, Class, and A New Discovery

So Monday the 25th was our first anniversary. We headed to Ounce, a fairly new steakhouse. It was an experience in itself to say the least. We’re not hifalutin folk. We like a good ole cheeseburger and taters. We totally felt out of place at this restaurant. Wait staff laying the napkin in your lap, always there to make sure your water or tea is never less than 75% full. The food was good as was the waiter. I just don’t expect to see us going back. The only reason we went is because I scored a $100 gift card for only $50. We still ended up paying $50 more but it was somewhat worth it for our first “fancy” dinner.

School has been going somewhat rather rough this semester. I’m only taking 2 classes worth 7 hours and I’m getting my butt kicked more when I was taking 13 hours last semester. My Microeconomics class is going fine as it’s very comparable to the Macro-Economics class I took last semester. I never thought I’d have a teacher that was younger than I am but I think this dude is. But it’s ok because he has an eyebrow ring, so that makes him cool.

My Calculus I class is a different story. Just about every last one of us sit through that class just waiting to get it over with. We don’t understand a single thing the teacher is teaching us. She has a problem conveying her lesson to us. Don’t get me wrong, she knows exactly what she’s trying to teach. She just can’t teach it. I’ve gone through the first few weeks of class in a daze. We have our first of two tests this Thursday. It counts for 25% of our grade. So I’ve been studying at the library for the past 3 days straight. I’m finally starting to understand the concepts now that I’ve looked through my Calculus cliffnotes and Calculus:Demystified books.

I know I can’t control how she teaches but I can control how I learn.

In other news, I’ve found that the gray/silver hairs on my head are not just on the sides. They have also sprouted on the top as well.
